WB's ThunderCats Movie Back on Track But as Live Action
A friend told me this as soon as he read this from the Movie Grapevine site. I've been told of this.
Quote:
"Five years ago when Transformers came out every 80’s kid thought it would be the start of a slew of movie adaptations of other 80’s properties, while G.I. Joe surely made it and The Ninja Turtles are coming back on the big screen next year properties like Voltron and He-Man still wait in line to for their moment in the spotlight. Thundercats, another 80’s property was also in the waiting but not anymore it would seem.
It was announced today that Warner Bros. Pictures has signed a deal with producer Brian Grazer and Ron Howard’s Imagine Entertainment to produce a live action installment of the Thundercats property. 'We are very excited to be involved with this project', said producer Brian Grazer, 'one of film’s biggest purposes is to take you to places you could only dream of, we believe Thundercats is just the thing young movie goers will crave to see.'
Writing the film will be Roberto Orci, part of the creative team behind Fringe, Transformers, and the upcoming “People Like Us” starring Chris Pine and Michelle Pfeiffer set to come out this June, will also serve as not only executive producers on the project but also the writing team. Orci is not the only ones involved in the script, noted television producer and writer Jason Katmis, who executive produced the cult-favorite Rosewell as well as Boston Public, the short lived Pepper Dennis, Friday Night Lights, and Parenthood an update on Ron Howard’s 80’s film of the same name. Katmis also co-wrote this year’s sweeping drama The Vow with Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams, and a few episodes of My So-Called Life which claimed Claire Danes to fame in the 90’s.
Speaking of Friday Night Lights, director Peter Berg who created the hit TV show and directed the movie it was a spawned off of as the soon to be released board game adaptation of Battleship has recently expressed interest to direct and produce a live action adaptation of the popular franchise. 'I’m actually a fan,' he says, 'both the old and the new shows are awesome and have serious movie potential.'
Depending on the success of Battleship, Berg may or may not be Warner Bros. Pictures top choice to helm the project, and they have been looking at other directors besides Berg. These directors include Pierre Morel (Taken, From Paris with Love), McG (Charlie’s Angels, Terminator: Salvation) and newcomer Rupert Sanders (Snow White & the Huntsman). Time will tell when either of these guys gets the gig, but considering how close Berg is to Howard and Grazer I’m going to place my bets that it will be him that gets the job. Not that I mind much, I’ve enjoyed most of his work and I’m probably glutton for punishment but I loved Han****. No release date has been set but it looks like Warner Bros. wants to play a safer game than it did with Green Lantern and not have the budget be over the max and wait a little for the new cartoon to boost in more popularity. Hopefully, if it is Berg, he won’t cast Lady Gaga as Cheetara…
