In 2010, Warner Bros. announced that they would be commencing production on a brand new ThunderCats animated series, and accompanied this announcement with concept art showing the darker tone of the show, as well as a press release.
Warner Bros. announcement included the information that Japanese animation studio Studio4°C would be in charge of recreating the series with a new, anime-influenced style, and that the show would be “a sweeping tale combining swords and science and boasting ferocious battles with the highest of stakes…”
Since this announcement, fans have learned that voice actor Larry Kenney, who portrayed Lion-O in the classic ThunderCats series from the 1980s, would be appearing in the new series, this time playing the role of Claudus, Lion-O’s father. Veteran voice actor Matthew Mercer also revealed on his Twitter feed that he would be voicing Tygra in the new series.
The popularity of the franchise has continued to grow, with fans out purchasing action figures and other merchandise, as well as attending conventions such as Thunder-Con. The concept art and involvement in the new 2011 ThunderCats promises to provide renewed interest and hopefully a new generation of fans!
